Believing is nothing other than, in the darkness of the world, touching
the hand of God. So said Benedict XVI this morning to participants in
this week's Spiritual Exercises retreat, led by Gianfranco Ravasi, which
concluded today. Thank you -- said the Pope -- for the past eight
years, in which you have borne with me, with great skill, affection,
love, faith, the weight of the Petrine ministry. Pope Benedict XVI
continued that there will remain a spiritual closeness, a deep communion
in prayer. Earlier, Cardinal Ravasi had made the analogy between the
Pope's retreat and the biblical image of the prophet Elijah, in silent
retreat on the mountain, listening to the voice of God and giving
witness of faith.
