From VOA Learning English, this is the Economics Report.

China is seeking to strengthen its image as the world's biggest market for the car industry. Chinese car sales increased 13 percent from a year ago. Industry experts are predicting total sales of over 20 million vehicles this year. By comparison, about 15 million vehicles are expected to be sold in the United States. At the Shanghai auto show this year, industry representatives were showing products designed to meet the demands of the Chinese market. Luxury cars and larger vehicles were the center of attention.

Dave Schoch is with the Ford Motor Company. He welcomed the chance to greet the many visitors to the auto show. There are 30 million customers in China, he says, and they want different styles and prices levels. Many Chinese see cars as a powerful symbol of success. Yale Zhang is with Automotive Foresight, an industry group. He says the rising demand for top quality automobiles is a sign of China's increasing wealth.

Demand has been very high for larger cars and big sport utility vehicles. SUV sales have increased nearly 50 percent from a year ago. Yet environmental issues and fuel concerns are leading to increased interest in vehicles with better fuel economy. Andy Palmer is an official with Nissan. He says his company started showing experimental electric cars four years ago. He says many in the industry dismissed the idea. Now, he says, it looks like a good move.

But for now, industry experts say new hybrid and electric technology is not a major force in China's car market. SUV sales in China are likely to double by 2015.
