Ngày 20 tháng 3, 2023 lúc 11:00AM tại: Trung Tâm Tĩnh Tâm Thánh Giuse - Don Bosco Salesian Rosemead, California, USA Reverend Paul NGUYEN HOAI CHUONG (1958 – 2023) Father Paul Chuong Nguyen was born on September 4, 1958, in Saigon, Vietnam, to Mr & Mrs Hua Nguyen and Hong-Lam Thi Ho. He was the 3rd of the seven children in the family. Fr. Chuong, his three brothers and three sisters along with the parents fled Vietnam in 1975 among the thousands of “boat people” and were fortunate enough to make it to the Philippines, then Guam and finally to the Indiantown Gap settlement camp in Pennsylvania. The family was sponsored out of the refugee camp, and resided in Sewaren, NJ. After high school completion, Fr Chuong enrolled among the Sons of Mary at Don Bosco Seminary in Newton, NJ, on September 7, 1977. Fr Chuong made his first profession as a Salesian on September 1, 1979, at Newton and his perpetual profession at Elizabeth, NJ, on August 16, 1986. Fr Chuong graduated from Don Bosco College in Newton in 1982. He did his practical training at Salesian Junior Seminary in Goshen, NY (1982-1983), and Mary Help of Christians School in Tampa (1983-1984).In 1988, Fr Chuong earned a Master of Divinity degree in theology at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio. He was ordained on May 29, 1988, at St. Therese Church in Linden, NJ. Fr. Chuong began his priestly ministry as dean of religious activities at Don Bosco College in Newton (1988-1989) before moving to Archbishop Shaw High School in Marrero, LA, as DRA for two years (1989-1991). He then taught religion& theology at St. Dominic Savio High School in East Boston (1991-1993) and Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, NJ (1993-2000). In 2000, Fr. Chuong became a member of the retreat team at the Don Bosco Retreat Center in Haverstraw, NY. In 2006, he took an assignment as treasurer at Mary Help of Christians Center in Tampa. He was also vice director in Tampa from 2007. In 2013, Fr. Chuong served as assistant pastor, vice director, and youth minister at St. Anthony Church in Elizabeth, NJ. In 2014, Fr. Chuong asked to move to California and became coordinator of the retreat center in Rosemead. He has been in Rosemead until his very last day. Fr. Chuong’s mission has always been to help the poor and promote youth, catering not only to their material but their spiritual needs. He’s passionate about young people. He founded Lua Viet Youth Associations since 1983 and numerous programs and campaigns since. He’s tireless working, promoting and raising funds for these projects, which include over the years: Lửa Việt camps, Tết magazines, Chén Gạo Tình Thân (Rice Bowl), Nguyễn Tường Tộ & Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận scholarships, You Can Help, Ministry without Borders, Beads of Hope, Sandals for Lepers, Masks Save Lives, Pray for Turkey & Syria, the Singing Priests, etc. Fr. Chuong is passionate in promoting the moral tradition of Vietnamese Catholics, in particular, respecting and following the example of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs saints. He is very enthusiastic in promoting the canonization of the late Cardinal Francis Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan. He’s a member of the “117 Group”. In November 2004 and some following years, Fr. Chuong joined in various medical missions to Vietnam. The project’s coordinator described, “He was at his best when entertaining school children… Most importantly he ministered to the spiritual and moral needs of the 159 team members, and for the first time since 1996, we enjoyed private Mass on Sunday…. Father Nguyen was the agent to elevate our medical mission trip to a unique spiritual experience.” Fr. Tim Ploch, who was his director in Columbus while Fr. Chuong was studying theology and later was Fr. Chuong’s provincial, described him as apostolic, innovative, and “insanely funny.” Fr. Chuong is survived by his parents and siblings in California.
